Your first kitesurfing lesson is an exciting introduction to the sport. Here’s exactly what to expect, step by step, so you arrive relaxed and make the most of your time on the water.

1. Meet your team and the spot

You’ll start with a quick briefing about the spot — where gear is set up on the beach — and, crucially, the wind and its direction. Your instructor will show you how to rig and de-rig the kite, adjust the harness and handle the board.

2. Safety first

Safety is everything in kitesurfing. You’ll learn the basic rules and right-of-way, how to keep a safe distance from other riders and swimmers, and how to use the safety system to release the kite in an emergency.

3. Flying the kite on land

Before you touch the water you’ll practise controlling the kite on the beach – flying it through the wind window, generating power in a controlled way, and launching and landing safely.

4. Into the water

Once you’re comfortable, you’ll head into the sea. Your instructor guides you on entering the water, riding in a straight line, turning and keeping your balance on the board.

5. Your first ride

Finally, you’ll get up on the board and start to glide. Your instructor teaches you to control direction and speed — and that first rush of being pulled along by the wind is unforgettable.
