Kitesurfing combines surfing with kite flying, and one of the first questions every beginner asks is: how long until I can actually ride? Here’s a realistic answer.

The short answer

On average it takes about 10 to 20 hours of practice to pick up the basics and ride safely on your own. The first few hours are best spent with a certified instructor, learning kite control and board handling properly.

What affects how fast you learn

  • Practice frequency: the more consistent your hours, the faster you progress.
  • Natural ability: some people simply pick it up quicker than others.
  • Conditions: steady wind and the right water make a big difference -which is exactly why Fuerteventura is such a good place to learn.

How to speed it up

Quality instruction is the single biggest accelerator. Our boat-supported lessons keep you in the best wind with your instructor beside you, so you spend more time riding and less time walking the beach. A structured beginner course gets you to your first rides quickly, and the intermediate course takes you on to riding upwind and your first turns.

Then comes the fun part

Once you can ride confidently, you’ll feel that unmistakable freedom – gliding over the water powered by the wind, linking turns and trying your first jumps. It takes dedication, but it’s worth every hour.
